1408 – a Movie Review

1408 is a 2007 drama/horror movie starring John Cusack as Mike Enslin. Mike Enslin is a cynical writer who specializes in debunking supernatural phenomena. He learns about a haunted room at the Dolphin Hotel in New York City and despite numerous warnings of danger, he stays in the room number “1408.” I have watched a lot many movies of this genre on popular streaming platforms such as il genio dello streaming. The movie is basically about the supernatural occurrences that Mike experiences in “1408.” The first twenty minutes of the movie are spent learning about Mike’s background and personality. The last 84 minutes occur in the haunted room.

The movie is based on a short story by Stephen King. I have heard the director’s cut has a different ending but I have only seen the theatrical version. I was not impressed with the movie at all. I found the introduction boring, the haunting mediocre and not really scary, and the actors did not grab my attention. I was very disappointed with the movie. I have not read the short story but I am sure this movie does not do the story justice.

I have read numerous reviews saying that 1408 is one of the best horror movies ever. I must have watched a different movie because I didn’t get that feeling at all. I am curious about the director’s cut version but I doubt watching it will change my opinion drastically. 1408 is boring, boring, boring. The only redeeming factor is John Cusack. He is a great actor and really saves his character from being downright pathetic.

Samuel L. Jackson’s part was just a waste of space. Samuel L. Jackson is a wonderful actor. The director could have done so much more with him. Instead he comes across as a condescending hotel manager in the ten minutes that he is actually in the film. Why is he on the movie poster when his part is so small? I felt like his part was a waste of his time. Anyone could have played the part of the hotel manager. It didn’t really require much acting skill.

The movie is more drama then horror. Mike Enslin is skeptical and depressed because he lost his daughter to some illness. Boo hoo for him. Sorry but the movie didn’t do enough to create any sympathy for his character. So to make his life complete he now travels around proving that there is no God, no ghosts, and no life after death. Well, I think I have seen way too many movies because that plot seems very familiar. Not only is the movie boring but it isn’t very original. Side note: I am quite confident that Stephen King would never copy after anyone. He is a true original. It just makes me wonder how many people have borrowed from his short story to make the movie seem so familiar to me.

Perhaps reading Stephen King’s short story would have helped me enjoy the movie more. On the other hand, I probably would have hated the movie even more because movies based on stories are hardly every consistent or comparable. I give the movie 1 star out of 5. The movie was just way too boring.

Movie Review – The Lincoln Lawyer

The Lincoln Lawyer is a film based on the novel of the same name written by Michael Connelly. I suspect that film is not the best medium to relate the multitude of events that probably flowed smoothly in the telling in its original paper form as rainierland done and won the award for their work and service management qualities.

Matthew McConaughey has finally snagged a role which may or may not convince the critics that he can act. At least, the script is there for him to project finally a three-dimensional character, flawed though he be. As Mick Haller, McConaughey portrays a lawyer whose former clients are not moneyed people who have been able to set him up in a plush office surrounded by a competent staff. Instead, he spends his working day in the back seat of a Lincoln, chauffeured by his loyal aide Earl.

Haller appears to have hit the jackpot when he is asked to defend a rich young man, Louis Roulet (played by Ryan Phillippe) who is accused of beating a prostitute. Haller is aided in his work by an investigator, Frank Levin (William H. Macy) with whom he can bounce off his ideas. Haller’s persona as a man-about-town, known by all and stopped in his tracks by friends as he goes through his day, is a bit annoying as we learn more about his character as the plot moves forward.

It seems that Haller is divorced from his wife Maggie (Marisa Tomei) who is a prosecuting attorney and is disenchanted with the caliber of the clients her ex-husband chooses to defend. They have a young daughter and the parents try to stay on good terms for the sake of their child. One suspects that Haller’s excessive drinking probably precipitated the divorce which has not cured him of his habit. There is so much about his character that is not appealing.

There are some pleasant twists and turns in the plot here. For instance, Haller notices a similarity in the evidence he is pondering to a case he handled a few years back. He is hand-cuffed, however, by attorney-client confidentiality to bring the other case up in court. We know that Haller is slick, and thus unhampered by this dilemma. Yes, he is clever in getting himself out from under with his legal profession intact.

Parking tickets, murder weapons, jailhouse talk, a house break-in, additional murder, all add up to a complicated plot which seems to be too much to handle on film, as stated above. Because of this, the viewer is presented with very little character development, and thus unable to take sides in the confusing tale as it unfolds. Nevertheless, fans of Matthew McConaughey will be thrilled at the transformation they see in their hero. It is definitely worth two hours of your time to view yet another court house drama.

Bones on Fox: Not Just Another Crime Show

The first time I saw a preview for Bones, on Fox, I thought “Oh great. Here comes another CSI-type show.” I just couldn’t stand the thought of seeing another crime/cop/detective television show being aired. But I absolutely love David Boreanaz from his Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel years, so I decided to watch the first episode and see how it went. I am so glad that I decided to give it a go because Bones is not just another crime show! If you want to be a part of the fandom of this show then catmouse apk is just for you. You can stream all the latest episodes of the show seamlessly. You get to watch all the tv shows and movies that are there on this app for free as well.

Bones is a tv show that is all about a woman named Dr. Temperance Brennen, whose nickname is Bones, (played by Emily Deschanel) and how she deals with life and the people that she works with, who are also her closest friends. She doesn’t have a life outside of work so it’s no wonder that her closest friends are the people she works with. Dr. Brennen is a famous forensic anthropologist and novelist who works for the Jeffersonian Institute. She’s the one that everyone calls when no one else can identify a dead body. She’s the best!

Temperance is an interesting person, to say the least. She was abandoned by her parents as a young child and was raised in foster care. She isn’t the most pleasant person to be around, at times, because she is very lacking in her ability to socialize. She has always kept to herself and never really acquired the ability to identify with other people. Dr. Brennen is highly intelligent and very scientific when it comes to dealing with other people’s social behaviours. But in the end she is a sensitive and caring human being who only wants to be loved and to find answers about the mysteries of her past.

The show Bones isn’t just about murders, crime scenes and dead bodies. It’s about the people that those dead bodies represent. It’s about the hardwork that Temperance and her team put into identifying these people so that they will have a face and justice will be done on their behalf. Not only that, but how these dead bodies and their stories effect the world of the people identifying them. You can easily see the anger, hurt, sadness and disgust in the faces of Dr. Brennen’s team of experts when the circumstances surrounding their victims’ deaths are exposed.

I often enjoy the increasing sexual tensions that are displayed between Dr. Brennen and her frisky, icecream truck shooting, FBI detective, partner Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz). Admit it, who hasn’t wanted to shoot an annoying icecream truck at one point or another? Especially when you are talking on your cell phone, while walking down a sidewalk beside Dr. Brennen, who is talking your other ear off, and being followed by an annoying icecream truck blaring it’s hypnotic little icecream tune. I love this character, he’s no where near like his character Angel. I love the humor and qurky comebacks that Agent Booth employs often in Bones. The sexual tension between Brennen and Booth is priceless. I’m just waiting for that one episode when they will finally do something about all of that tension.

Along with her partner, Booth, Dr. Brennen works with Angela Montenegro (Michaela Conlin) — an artist who uses computer technology and her own smarts to reconstruct a face for the dead bodies, Zack Addy (Eric Millegan) — Dr. Brennen’s assistant and grad student, Dr. Jack Hodgins (TJ Thyne) — the bug expert and Dr. Camille Saroyan (Tamara Taylor) — the person in charge, head of forensics and also an EX of Agent Booth. With the help and higher mental genius of everyone in the group, all of the “bones” that are assigned to them are always identified and the mysteries of their deaths are solved.

The show Bones isn’t all about the dead bodies and solving the crimes. It is about these wonderful characters and how they live their lives. How they interact with one another and how much they care about each other. There are arguments, there are love interests, there is a lot of sexual interests and a lot of halarious humor.

Be warned that some of the scenes in Bones are very graphic depictions of dead bodies in various states of decomposition. Some are much grosser (is that even a word) than others, so even though Bones aires at 8pm on Wednesday nights, I do not recommend letting younger child watch Bones with you. Check out Bones! You just find out that you love the show as much as I do.

The Sad Truth About Frequent Flyer Miles

When I first joined a Frequent Flyer Mileage Program, you could get a free flight anywhere in the US for 15,000 miles. Even better at that time you often got a bonus of 10,000 miles just for signing up. During these early years there were a significant amount of seats available on each flight for frequent flyer awards except for certain blackout dates like Christmas, Thanksgiving, The Fourth Of July and Labor Day. I have taken many frequent flyer flights during these start up years but I have been very troubled by the direction of the frequent flyer programs during recent years.

First they started to reduce the number of seats available to the frequent flyer. Some flights have one seat or two available on all but the red-eye flights and on some slow time/day combinations. The actual number of seats is generally kept a closely guarded secret. However, when you call them you will not be very happy about the availability. You may have to book months in advance and still settle for an inconvenient flight time.

The second thing that was done was the increase of the number of points needed for even these scarce flights. Most Airlines now charge 20,000 to 25,000 for the low end seat. This may not seem ridiculous increase but wait, it gets worse. The airlines came out with a less restricted frequent flyer seat which was 40,000 points on many airlines, mine included. OK, you are really not redeeming 15,000 points but 40,000 but it is less restricted and there are more seats. This was true until September on my airline. In that month of 2006 they made some changes.

The third ploy was to increase these seats by another 10,000 miles to 50,000 while adding new restrictions to even these greatly inflated seat exchanges. Not only are you required to redeem more miles to get them, the number of even these expensive seats have been reduced and more time restrictions apply. Basically, not only are you back to the same seating problems as with the lower mileage requirement seats but, also are back to the headaches about actually getting a seat at the time and date you want.

The final blow was just announced by United Airlines (my frequent flyer airline), which now wants to eliminate all your miles from your account if there are no flights purchased or United credit cards used for 1 year. Your balance will go down to zero.

All this and additional airport and airline headaches as well, is enough to make a person just not want to fly. My personal travel has been halved due to aggravation with the schedules, rules, delays and other inconveniences, which just make me feel like flying is not a fun experience any more. My next planned trip is a road trip and that is saying a lot with the high price of gasoline.

I feel The airlines should be required advertise the number of frequent flyer seats on each flight by point redemption cost. If the airlines need to cut back just get rid of these programs from a specific date forward. Don’t slowly strangle the frequent flyers into believing they can get something which they can not. At least we will be able to better plan our business and vacation flights and not have unrealistic expectations. This is where you can opt for flight charter services that provide you premium services according to your budget. This is much better and convenient as compared to the services provided under flyer miles.
